Excerpt from “Kujichagulia: On,” from the Kwanzaa CD entitled
“Seven: A Kwanzaa Soundtrack”

If you never told me I can’t fly could I levitate?
If there wasn’t a ceiling above me would I elevate?
As long as I can move, then I’ve got movement to celebrate,
Watch the tranquility in my eyes as I meditate;
Better make room at the finish line, when it’s mine, then it’s time,
Identifying with what I’ve been defining within this mind;
Walk the thinnest line between a diminished shine and relentless minds,
Stay focused on the winners sign, humming this endless rhyme;
And even as I encounter fatigue, with weak knees, and my feet bleed,
And defeat seeks me . . . I shall proceed;
Waking up everyday better than last night, shine in the darkness like a flashlight,
If you feel me holla “That’s right!”;
And if it’s all the same, I prefer to run my own game,
Cut my own chains, use my own brain, face my own shame,
Take my own blame, heal my own pain, make my own change,
Claim my own name, and help my own gain;
Feel my energy! I’m determined to make my own identity,
Until the end of the time, defending what’s mine;
An infinity sign is branded on my perseverance,
I may stumble and fall, make some mistakes, encounter interference;
But there ain’t no stopping me, that’s my philosophy,
Till we’re on top of the pile keep walking these miles;
And even when the fat lady hits a high note, I’m gonna ride so,
They can watch in amazement as I go....
On.
